A wonderful talk from the Berta's Flax Foundation

We recently had a fabulous day welcoming Christiane Seufferlein of the Berta's Flax Foundation in Austria as a guest speaker. Christiane gave Guild Members and Visitors a wonderful talk on the flax spinning and linen weaving traditions in the remote Bohemian forest area that sits in a cross border location between Austria, Germany and Czech Republic.
Christiane kept us all spell bound as she relayed the fascinating and often very moving stories of the Bavarian women, their harsh and often impoverished lives and the importance of their valuable dowry chests filled with high quality stricks of processed flax that were kept as a safeguard against hard times. She also showed us many examples of linen weaving and many of us were delighted to be able to take home a strick of dowry flax to use in our own spinning and weaving projects.
The inspirational and thought provoking day continued after lunch with a hands on lesson fom Christiane in spinning flax using a pencil.
A massive thank you to Christiane for including us in your "flax tour" of England and Wales we all really enjoyed spending the day with you. We wish you and your family a safe journey home and we hope to see you again sometime in the not too distant future. Also a big thank you to our Events Secretary, Sam for oganising Christiane's visit to us.
