What a great day we had recently, in the company of talented Spinner, Weaver, Artist and Sculptor Sue Hiley Harris, who treated us to a wonderful talk in the morning on Silk and the Silkworm.
Sue who lives near Brecon, has kept silk worms herself and gave us an overview of the lifecycle of the silkworm and the production of silk thread from their cocoons. Sue covered the different types of silk moth and types of cultivated and wild silk. She illustrated her talk with some detailed photos and physical examples of silk cocoons and various silk fibres as well as beautiful examples of her own work - spinning, knitting and weaving with them.
We were pleased to welcome visitors from Brecknock and Gwent Guilds. After lunch the day continued with a workshop on spinning silk - more on this to follow in a separate article.
